Connecticut grenst in het westen aan de staat New York, in het noorden aan Massachusetts en in het oosten aan Rhode Island.

De eerste europese ontdekker was, in het jaar 1614, de Nederlandse ontdekkingsreiziger Adriaen Block. Na zijn ontdekkingsreis zijn Nederlandse pelshandelaren verder de "Connecticut River" opgevaren. Zij hebben vlakbij het tegenwoordige Hartford een fort gebouwd, de "Dutch Point".
Het noorden van de staat is berg- en heuvelachtig, het zuiden vrij vlak. Het telt veel meren en rivieren, waarvan de belangrijkste de Connecticut is, die vanuit Massachusetts langs Hartford zuidwaarts naar de oceaan stroomt.
De belangrijkste steden zijn de hoofdstad Hartford, Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven met haar Yale universiteit en Windsor.
